Wilmott Dixon Re-Thinking and a number of partners including White Design and Max Fordham have designed a showcase mini school, geared towards demonstrating ideas for the use of sustainable materials, the design allows it to omit less carbon. The school , which is at the Building Research Establishment's innovation park, has been built from recycled solid timber supplied by Eurban consisting of cross-piled off-cuts.
The Re-Thinking concept design, aims to achieve embedded sustainability as a core element of the curriculum; the school building itself becomes a teaching and learning tool. Every part of the school's design, construction and operation is an educational opportunity.
The school aims to demonstrate that modern methods of construction can be:
*materially sustainable
*low carbon - embodied and operational
*cost effective
*beautiful
*use natural ventilation and day lighting
*adopt one planet living methodology
*design can be used as a teaching & learning tool.
