'Choose & Use': guidance on strength grading

Timber strength and spans is the latest addition to the TRADA and wood for good (wfg) series of ‘Choose & Use' timber information sheets aimed at the general builder.

It explains that timber used for structural applications must be graded and clearly marked to show that it complies with the correct standards and strength requirements laid down by building codes and regulations. Grading can be carried out visually or by machine. The information sheet stresses that when a piece of timber is resawn, it has to be re-graded and tables of grades and strength classes are included.

This is the ninth topic to be added to the successful ‘Choose & Use' series - also included are Treated timber, Wood based sheet materials, Timber species, Storing timber and wood-based products on building sites, Engineered wood products, External wood cladding, Sustainable timber sourcing and Mechanical fixings.

‘Choose & Use' timber information sheets are available exclusively to members of TRADA and wood for good (wfg). Based on market research among merchant members, the sheets have been designed to help merchants guide their customers in making the right choice of timber materials.
